55 Days at Peking Soundtrack [1963-2011]

La-La Land Records presented an expanded version of a classic score by Dimitri Tiomkin from 1963: 55 Days at Peking.

A dramatization of the Boxer Rebellion in 1900 China, 55 Days at Peking depicts the Battle of Peking from the perspective of a group of foreign diplomats protected by the Chinese government in Peking’s legations district. Charlton Heston stars as an American major defending the ambassadors, and David Niven and Ava Gardner play British and Russian dignitaries, the latter of whom engages in an affair with Heston’s major.

One of the last regular directing credits by Nicholas Ray, director of Rebel Without a Cause, Peking boasts an Oscar-nominated score that’s classic Tiomkin, all muscular action interspersed with descriptive romantic themes at times. The music of 55 Days at Peking received two Oscar nominations, one for the general score and one for Best Song, the end title theme “So Little Time,” performed for the film by Andy Williams. The film was also prestigious enough in its day to warrant an album release on vinyl at the time.

Now, La-La Land greatly expands that album presentation on a lavish two-disc set, featuring nearly all of the score in stereo (with a few cues in mono), as well as several mono bonus tracks released on original singles or intended for EP releases. The set, featuring a 24-page booklet including liner notes from film score writer Mark K. DeWald, is limited to 2,000 copies and can be ordered here. As always, the track list is after the jump!

La Notte Soundtrack [1961-2011]

Initially released in a 1960 EP with only 4 cues, the original score remained unavailable until 1996 when the Japanese label SCL issued a limited album that quickly sold out and became part of every fans' wish-list. The Japanese CD features 10 original tracks plus a 20-minutes suite comprising several alternates, outtakes as well as some previously unreleased tracks, all of which created some confusion.

For this new release, remastered and restored by Claudio Fuiano, we have been fortunate enough to be granted access to the original recording sessions tapes vaulted in Cinevox files in Rome, with a warm monaural sound. The outcome is a musical legacy of one of the most important movies in his most complete presentation to date.

Rosemary's Baby / The Fearless Vampire Killers Soundtrack [1967 - 1969]

These two soundtracks are really hard to find. They are by Roman Polanski's friend the late Krzysztof Komeda. The first part is the soundtrack to Roman Polanski's film 'Rosemary's Baby' and the second one is the soundtrack to his brilliant and but sadly flopped film 'The Fearless Vampire Killers'.

The latter being one of only a few films in which Polanski's wife, the tragically murdered Sharon Tate played a part.

During the recording of the 'Rosemary's Baby' soundtrack while at a party, Komeda was involved in a never fully explained accident which would lead to his premature death in 1969, he was 38 years old.

Billie / Popi Soundtrack [1965-1969-2010]

http://img573.imageshack.us/img573/5470/0018fc68.jpg

Intrada presents a double-header from the United Artists record catalog of the 1960s. Billie (1965) and Popi (1969) are two flavorful, enthusiastic film scores by then-prolific composer Dominic Frontiere. Billie is hip, spunky and tuned to the sixties teenage beat with musical pleasures aplenty -- while most of the songs here are in pop mode (with bubblegum lyrics to match), Frontiere’s score is often funky, bluesy, jazzy—befitting a man who, earlier in his peripatetic career, fronted a jazz sextet. Billie tells the coming-of-age story, with songs, of a 15-year-old girl (pluckily played by Patty Duke) whose athletic ability sets her apart from her peers, causing all sorts of endearing trouble with boys, parents, and school officials.

Five years later, Frontiere was offered a very different kind of project. Popi is a small film dealing with an unusual subject: the struggles of a Puerto Rican immigrant (Alan Arkin) to provide a decent life for his two little boys in New York’s Spanish Harlem. Eventually, he concocts a desperate scheme to pass them off as Cuban Boat People refugees, hoping that the resultant publicity will attract a potentially wealthy adoptive family who will get his children off the city’s mean streets. The music for Popi includes more dramatic content, including some beautiful Latin-flavored melodies and a wonderfully symmetrical, nautically-buoyant sailing sequence. Frontiere shows his mettle, providing a score that both supports and enhances the film’s complex mix of comedy and wistfulness. He begins right out of the gate with a sprightly tune for the film's main character.

For this premiere release of Dominic Frontiere's scintillating, sparkling works for Billie and Popi, Intrada had access to the original stereo LP masters stored at MGM. This release features the original LP programs and is limited to 1000 copies.

Rome Adventure Soundtrack [1962]

Rome Adventure, also known as Lovers Must Learn, is a 1962 romantic drama film, based on Irving Fineman's novel
Plot
A New England schoolteacher, Prudence Bell, Suzanne Pleshette decides to take off for Italy. Prudence has recommended a book to one of her students that has drawn the ire of the school board and she resigns one step ahead of being fired. She defends the book "Lovers Must Learn" and tells the prudish board that she's going to Rome where she will be surrounded by people who really know the meaning of love. She sails from New York to Italy and at the rail she accidentally picks the wrong man she was standing near as a protective consort. This all gets resolved via telegrams and gives us two potential romantic interests before even leaving. Albert Stillwell, a student of Etruscan history is a perfect gentlemen and scout, while Rossano Brazzi, playing Roberto Orlandi who is the perfect Roman lover, mature, romantic, poetic, and always interested.

Once in Rome, Prudence checks into her boarding home and meets a self centered American architect, Don Porter, Troy Donahue, who is running away from/to the love of his life, Lyda Kent( Angie Dickinson ) a controlling, manipulative bombshell of a woman tied up in her own love storms. Prudence needs a job and gets a tip during dinner that first night in Rome, an English speaking job in an American Book Shop near one of Rome's famous fountains. Bright and early the next morning she lands a perfect job with the bookstore owner, Constance Ford and her large, loud, fuzzy sheep dog. Their first meeting and friendly banter is a terrific lead into their characters and their budding friendship.

The plot thickens as Prudence takes an Italian language course on her record player which sets off a yelling match between her and Don, who isn't a bit interested in her, yet. Don is a close confidant with Roberto and has several discussions about his relationship with Lyda and it's impending implosion. As it falters, Prudence becomes a rebound candidate and handles his interest with aplomb. The two take a trip around Rome in horse drawn carts, his red Vespa scooter, while seeing much of Rome in a great travel log and romantic journey. While at dinner looking over the entire City of Rome, Don buys a chandelier from a peddler that serves as a symbol of their new friendship. At dinner, Emilio Pericoli sings the wonderful song "Al Di Là", his Italian version that rose to number 6 following the movies release in '62.

Lyda and Prudence meet at a stuffy dinner, the visual daggers are shared as each shows the other who's territory Don Porter belongs in. Albert floats through several scenes and is always the clueless, nerdy student with just the right timing to diffuse any situation, unbeknown to him.

Summer holidays, August escapes arrive, the book store closes and Don and Prudence sneak out of town on a train to Lago Maggiore in northern Italy for a wonderful, innocent and beautiful tour of the garden spots of northern Italy, the Italian alps with "Al Di Là" playing over the lift speakers, Verona and its famous Romeo and Juliet balcony, it's market place where the plot thickens. Prudence runs into friends, and makes a mad dash with her Romeo Don out of the market and eventually back to Rome. A time well spent, relationships cemented rock solid and a good time had by all.

Back in Rome, Lyda has gotten herself into more trouble and has urgent needs to see Don who by now knows he has to break off his relationship with her. Don is summoned to a villa where Lyda plays cat and mouse about the fact that she has married a possessive rich old man and needs Don to free her from her palatial prison. Don finally comes to his senses and heads back to Rome, but Prudence is convinced that Dan wants to be with Lyda and makes her plans to leave Rome and return to the States. The process turns into a chaotic goodbye scene in the train station between Prudence and all her friends she's made while in Rome.

She sails back to New York City, and while waiting at the ships rail sees her parents, waves and begins to disembark. While stepping down she sees a chandelier weaving its way through the crowd and behind her family. Her heart leaps as she passes the family and slides into the arms of Don Porter her prize from her Rome Adventure. The end.

Tobruk Soundtrack [1967-2010]

For the 1967 Universal Pictures war epic Tobruk, Bronislau Kaper wrote a musically massive, thundering wall of sound — just like the formidable German fortress under assault by the Allies during WWII. His primary theme is weighted by a barrage of brass playing eight angular notes seemingly chiseled out of concrete and layered throughout the entire score in blocks. It makes its first appearance in the Main Title in its most militaristic form, bursting with brass, bristling with snares, underlining the massive potency of the German force in North Africa. Numerous other motifs play a role, but Kaper seldom strays from his main Tobruk theme, an idea whose dominance mirrors the towering objective under siege by the Allies.

For this premiere presentation of the soundtrack, Intrada was generously given access to all of the multi-track master elements recorded at Universal
Picture’s scoring stage in February of 1967 under the supervision of Joseph Gershenson. The ½” 15 i.p.s. three-track stereo session masters were vaulted in magnificent condition, allowing Intrada to create brand new two-track stereo mixes of every cue. The results are vibrant and robust, bringing great clarity to this energetic, martial musical campaign.

Tobruk tells the tale of a near-suicidal mission staged at a turning point in World War II: it’s 1942, and if Rommel and his Afrika Korps can gain access to the Suez Canal, they will, in effect, control the Mediterranean. To prevent this, a small Allied force is sent on an 800-mile march across the deserts of North Africa to the port city of Tobruk; there, they hope to knock out a deadly battery of German guns so an Allied invasion can be launched, and blow up Rommel’s massive fuel depot, thus stymieing the Desert Fox’s designs on the Canal.

This release is limited to 2000 units.

The Alamo Soundtrack [2010]

For years soundtrack collectors have waited for a complete recording of Tiomkin’s score for The Alamo. The wait is finally over. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the epic Western, a complete recording of music from the film will be available on May 11 from Screen Archives Entertainment and Tadlow Music. The Tadlow Music production for Prometheus Records ranks as one of the most ambitious film music recording efforts ever.

Billed as the “World Premiere Recording of the Complete Film Score,” the project was spearheaded by executive producer Luc Van de Ven and album producer James Fitzpatrick. This herculean effort took place during a weeklong session in Prague in late November 2009. Nic Raine conducted, and Olivia Tiomkin Douglas attended the orchestra sessions. The choir was recorded in London in early December. Orchestrator Patrick Russ prepared the scores from material in the Dimitri Tiomkin Collection at USC’s Cinematic Arts Library. The music, recorded by Jan Holzner (orchestra) and Gary Thomas (choir), was mixed and mastered by Gareth Williams. A full-color booklet with an introduction by James Fitzpatrick and liner notes by Frank K. DeWald accompanies the boxed set. Fitzpatrick calls the recording the greatest challenge of his career, explains how the recording came about, and gives interesting behind-the-scenes details concerning Tiomkin’s score. DeWald, the American composer, choir director, and frequent contributor to Pro Musica Sana, provides cue-by-cue summaries in the extensive liner notes.

The three-CD set contains nearly three hours of music from the 1960 film—more than half previously unreleased. Topping it all off are the bonus tracks, which include original and alternate versions for several cues. The orchestral backing track for the Entr’acte is not to be missed. As DeWald points out, “Tiomkin’s vivid orchestral textures and colors stand out in this orchestra-only track that underscored the original choral version.”

Jack The Giant Killer Soundtrack [1962-2010]

Fantasy films often call for expressive, classically-based musical scores to ground their fanciful settings, outlandish characters and special effects. The 1962 film Jack the Giant Killer is no exception. The film features over 80 minutes of underscore, nearly “wall-to-wall” music. Jack the Giant Killer required a rousing score bursting with heroism, danger, mysticism and playfulness. Composers Paul Sawtell and Bert Shefter were hired to create a fairy tale feeling from the rousing opening credits march, the gallant fanfares for the kingdom of Cornwall, and the deceptive music box chimes for Cormoran before the creature transforms from apparent plaything to menacing giant. Shrill, clustered brass effects characterize the movie’s marauding, animated monsters; eerie, trembling strings and brass stings and a malevolent theme underscores Pendragon and his magic spells; a traditional Irish jig provides wit to the film’s rhyming leprechaun and spine-chilling, wailing voices underscore the film’s terrifying witches as well as the Princess Elaine’s transformation into an evil enchantress herself. Sawtell’s Prince Valiant-style title march
makes a particularly effective and warm theme for Jack, especially as it’s interwoven with an expressive violin d’amore theme for the romance between Jack and the Princess.

The story of Jack the Giant Killer begins in the kingdom of Cornwall, where the banished wizard Pendragon (Torin Thatcher) returns in disguise to bestow gifts on the Princess Elaine (Judi Meredith). One of Pendragon’s gifts is a music box containing a doll that dances on command for Elaine. That night the satyr-like figure grows into the giant Cormoran and snatches the princess. Heading to rendezvous with Pendragon’s henchman Garna (Walter Burke), the giant invades the farm where handsome and heroic Jack (Kerwin Mathews) resides. After a violent battle with Cormoran, Jack slays the the giant and his reputation is made. But that is only the start of the adventure...

The complete score to Jack the Giant Killer is featured on this 2-CD set, mastered from the original 1/4" mono elements in pristine condition and is limited to 1000 copies.

The Miracle Worker Soundtrack [1962-2010]

It’s hard not to be moved by THE MIRACLE WORKER. From its genesis on TV’s PLAYHOUSE 90 to its Tony Award-winning Broadway production and the celebrated film (and later stage revivals and TV movies), the story of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan is the stuff of great drama. But nothing captures the inspirational magic of the story like the 1962 film adaptation of William Gibson’s play.

Arthur Penn’s direction is justly lauded as are the well-deserved Oscar-winning performances of Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke as Annie and Helen. Not often getting the credit it is due is Laurence Rosenthal’s beautiful score.

Rosenthal was originally hired to provide a score for the stage production. Though that idea was scrapped, we can thank the play’s original producer, Fred Coe, and Penn for bringing Rosenthal back for the film. The score is based on three main themes–one each for Annie and Helen, both based on separate three-note motifs, and a tender interpolation of the lullaby “Hush, Little Baby,” which serves to show the budding relationship between Annie and her pupil. Annie is no wall flower and her theme is full of bustling energy.

Laurence Rosenthal's early landmark becomes available as CD, showcasing highly sensitive side of famous veteran composer. CD presented in newly mastered assembly, prepared from composer's own first generation 1/4" mono tapes, the best surviving master elements available. Gorgeous project, courtesy of MGM, preserves one of the sixties greatest scoring triumphs! Laurence Rosenthal conducts members of New York Philharmonic. Intrada Special Collection release limited to 1000 copies!
