While many fans are quick to point out the extremely beautiful visual characteristics of Terrence Malick's DAYS OF HEAVEN, few may not be as quick to put the spotlight on Ennio Morricone's effectively complementary score. This two disc set features the original 1978 original soundtrack album as well as the rest of the cues used in the picture. Because Morricone gave Malick permission to move his cues around throughout the picture at Malick's pleasure, little was known about what Morricone's original intentions truly were...until now. Windows Soundtrack [1979-2011]

World premiere release of one of the least known scores written by Maestro Ennio Morricone for the American cinema.

Windows (1979), directed by Gordon Willis (his only film as director, since he is more famous as a cinematographer—with credits including such classics as The Godfather and some of Woody Allen’s films) starred Talia Shire and Elizabeth Ashley. Emily Hollander (Shire) is the subject of a lesbian obsession at the hands of Andrea Glassen (Ashley), her next-door neighbor. As Emily begins dating detective Bob Luffrono (Cortese), Andrea overflows with jealousy, spying on Hollander through her own window. This psychosexual thriller, set in Manhattan, gave Morricone the opportunity to create an unsettling melodic score, beginning with a gorgeous main theme for piano, glockenspiel, strings and harpsichord entitled "A Terrific View." This theme is the axis of a score that bridges the sound created by Morricone for Italian giallo with the elegant atmosphere of such American movies as Bloodline, The Thing, Disclosure, Frantic and Bugsy.

Windows has never before been released in any format. This is perhaps because there are only about 15 minutes of original music in the film, and because Morricone’s recording (made in New York’s A&R Studios) has long been thought lost. Luckily, finally appeared the original 24-track master in the MGM vaults—in mint condition—and discovered that Morricone actually wrote 46 minutes of music for the film, instead of only the 15 minutes used in the final film cut.

Now Morricone’s complete score has been remixed in stereo, produced and mastered by Daniel Winkler. With a 20-page full color booklet and liner notes by Daniel Schweiger, this release gives all followers of the Roman maestro the opportunity to hear one of his most obscure and surprising works from the late seventies—which finally sees the light 32 years after its recording!

Rain Main and Red Sonja Soundtrack [2010]

Preseverance Records just released two discs of Rain Main and Red Sonja. The label, which has specialized in smaller-scale soundtracks and soundtrack reissues since 2002 (most notably the score to the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers), will release expanded scores of the ’80s action epic Red Sonja (1985) and the hugely successful drama Rain Man (1989).

Red Sonja, based on the Marvel Comics character, starred Brigitte Nielsen as the titular barbarian and featured Arnold Schwarzenegger as her fighting ally Lord Kalidor (Schwarzenegger, who had just become a megastar off the back of The Terminator, was no stranger to the material, having played another Marvel barbarian, Conan, in two films). Though it was not a success, it was lauded for its symphonic score written by legendary composer Ennio Morricone. The original album featured two long symphonic suites from the soundtrack totaling a half-hour of music; that album was paired with Morricone’s score to Bloodline (1979) for a Varese Sarabande CD Club title in 1990. But this is the premiere release of the score in a proper soundtrack sequence, and features several cues never before released on disc.

The late ’80s classic Rain Man won four Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman’s now-iconic portrayal of a severely autistic man. The score was notable for being one of the first mainstream soundtracks by composer Hans Zimmer, now known as one of the go-to composers for thrilling (if slightly generic) action music for films such as Batman Begins, The Dark Knight and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.
