White Fang Soundtrack [1991-2012]

Treat for Basil Poledouris and Hans Zimmer fans! World premiere 2-CD release of both composer's powerful soundtracks for Randal Kleiser filming of Jack London's outdoor boy & wolf tale WHITE FANG, presented by Walt Disney Pictures, starring Ethan Hawke, Klaus Maria Brandauer, James Remar.

CD1 offers rich, evocative score by Poledouris, given primary credit in finished film. Stately main theme in major key anchors, while numerous motifs, smaller ideas create multi-layered musical tapestry of turn-of-the-19th-century gold prospecting in Alaska. In contrast are sequences both frightening, tender. Several cues never before heard add depth to impressive score. But there's much more!

CD2 offers second score by Hans Zimmer, much of it also featured in film, with completely different thematic material spotlighting composer's then new meld of symphony with synthesizer. Early-ish Zimmer score offers perhaps his largest-scale scoring to that date. Powerful themes, aggressive action, rhythmic adventure, tingling suspense, gentle warmth... it's all here! And there's still more: also find exciting "Bear Attack" co-written by Shirley Walker & Zimmer as well as additional cues by Fiachra Trench. Finally, numerous saloon source cues composed by Poledouris round out lengthy 2-CD package. Newly-mixed and presented in dynamic stereo from both 24-track analog masters (format of choice for Poledouris), 32-track digital masters (format of choice for Zimmer), all vaulted in mint condition at Disney. Cherry 2000 / The House of God [1984-1987-2011]

Intrada presents the return of Basil Poledouris' score to Cherry 2000 along with the premiere release of the same composer's score to The House of God. Recorded by the Hungarian State Symphony Orchestra and augmented with shimmering electronics, Cherry 2000 provided Poledouris with a sense of creative freedom that infused his music with an offbeat, yet thrilling old school retro-western score. Poledouris’ theme for Cherry encapsulates her dream-like, tender and romantic sense, for unlike most “robot” scores, there’s nothing remotely threatening in Cherry’s hypnotically beautiful melody. The combined elements of romance, action, and heroics makes for a colorful and infectious musical program. This release features the same contents as the previous Prometheus release, with some slight alterations in sequencing.

Set in the year 2017, Cherry 2000 finds a society where recycling is king and production virtually nil. Robots are prized commodities, especially for mild-mannered Anaheim businessman Sam Treadwell (David Andrews), whose life is consumed by his total love for a girlfriend too perfect to be real. After Cherry (supermodel Pamela Gidley) blows her fuse during a bubbly lovemaking session, Sam finds that his only hope to resurrect her is to venture into the outlaw-filled desert wasteland, where another Cherry awaits her memory chip. He hires an equally beautiful, if far less lady-like “tracker” named E. Johnson (Melanie Griffith) for the task, and the duo engages in Road Warrior-inspired car chases, gunfights and much humorous bickering on their way to the robotfilled ruins of Las Vegas.



For The House of God, Poledouris scored this "dramedy" with an unconventional musical approach that would prove vital in uniting the film's volatile emotional tones, refining them by way of a classical score that could comment on the film’s satire while also playing its segues into graphically powerful medical drama. Baroque music had been a favorite way of playing to the pompousness of academia (as well as its rarefied origins), and that's no exception here. He scored his music for an economical but full-bodied chamber orchestra of strings (violin, viola, cello, bass), flute, alto flute, oboe, English horn, clarinet, bassoon, two French horns, two piccolo trumpets (doubling standard B-flat trumpets when called for), tuba, harpsichord, plus organ and light percussion. The results are distinct and transparent.

The House of God details the eventful year that a group of interns spend battling their own nerves and the money-grubbing callousness of the hospital hierarchy.

This release is limited to 1500 units.

Flesh + Blood Soundtrack [1985-2010]

After having done Conan and Conan the Destroyer, you'd think that Basil Poledouris would have been a little loathed to cover the same kind of territory again, but with a different film, after all, there are only so many ways to score a sword and scorcery type film. Rather annoyingly released through the Varese CD Club (and hence difficult to get hold of these days), this is very much like Conan even if the score is consructed more simply and basically alternates action cues with moody romance music. I guess with such a portentous titles as Flesh + Blood you wouldn't expect the action cues to be fun and light but rather more gutsy and loud and indeed you get what you expect. The main theme is constructed of parallel fifths and so often sounds like that Roman music that Miklos Rozsa used in his biblical epics, but you wouldn't really mistake this for a Rozsa score, there are enough obvious Poledouris stylings. This is naturally introduced in the main title, which also features some of the softer music and so pretty much sets both tones for the score.

Siege of the City, Wagon Attack and Castle Invasion are all jolly exciting action cues with a fun game of 'let's see how many brass instruments we can have playing at once' which is always fun to play. However, the action high point would have to be The Box (which doesn't exactly sound like an action cue I admit), but it's a riveting five minutes of extremely loud brass, percussion and everything else flailing around in the background. Mind you, I wouldn't say that it was overorchestrated though, but then again this is music that isn't shy of making an impression. Poledouris uses lots of interesting harmonies to keep a bit more interesting than it might have been. I don't know what it is about Poledouris' harmonies, but they seem to be his maojr asset and it is the harmony that usually makes it easy to tell whether he wrote the score or not. The romantic music I thought was verging on naff for some reason, but it is exactly the kind of Conan inspired romance that I'd expect so I wasn't too disappointed. The finale track neatly sums everything up and provides some more light hearted music which goes cunningly combine with the main theme and weave in the romance as well.

Since this sells for large sums of money, the chances of anyone wanting to give up their copy is very small, especially since it's an extremely enjoyable score all round. While it is rousing, it never becomes too much or overbearing and there is always some interesting orchestral device or quieter moment to provide the required rest periods between stirring loudness. If you have Conan then you're not really missing a great deal, since this is much along the same lines, although I hasten to add that it's not a clone; like I said, there are only so many ways of scoring this kind of film and not many directors are willing to part with formula and Poledouris was almost certainly asked based on his experience of Conan. Good stuff and worth hearing for sure, so beg, borrow or steal a copy.
